Something New...

We went early in the day to the birth center,
but then my labor came to an abrupt halt...
so there was a lot of waiting!

Tired of waiting for mom to have this baby!

Rock wanted in to the tub!  It was big enough for the whole family!

But at last...
Here she is!  Her first big breath of life!

A picture says it all.

Miss Bright Eyes.  She looked all around for a long time.

Teresa (Nathan's mom) was here too -- she took this picture...
After waiting all day with us and being a great birth assistant,
she helped us by taking the restless Ava and Rock to get some ice cream.
They missed the birth by just a few minutes!

INDIA

India's foot print on the wall of fame...

Polly and Janet -- the beautiful "baby catchers".  They love their job -- and they made this a beautiful experience.

Rock calls her "Tiny" -- he is very soft with her.

She is getting lots of love!

Welcome -- little girl.

Rock and the 2 "V's"

2 things Rock is not easy going about:

1.  The Vacuum.  It is his pet.  I am not allowed to have a turn.  If I get it out, and he sees it -- he will not let me turn it off, nor will he allow me to use it the way I need to.  He is pretty helpful and vaccuums for a little while, then he will just sit by it lovingly with it roaring next to him.  When I finally put it away (in my mind I can just see our electric meter dial spinning wildly!), he cries and cries!

2.  The Violin.  If it is time for Elle to play the violin, he comes in a hurry proclaiming with all the energy of body and voice: "my turn! my turn!"  He points under his chin for where I need to put it.  I usually let him try it.  I help him hold it and he actually makes a decent sound!  I get tired of it long before he does.  In fact I have never been able to stand there and hold it long enough... he still wants to play when I am ready to put it away.  The other day, I was busy with Elle and didn't get to him.  He took matters into his own hands.  After we put the violin away, I heard it again somewhere in the house -- I followed the sound and found him on the couch playing it.  Vivaldi in the making?

September.

September.  Some of you may be slipping slowly into that savory season of fall.  But here in Houston, it is still hot-as-heck-fire-summer.
We are still wading through boxes, and I don't see the end in sight.  But I am just hoping that I can finish the nest before I get too big to nest anymore!  I am filling out into a glorious basketball figure -- and I don't mean as in fitness like an NBA star.  My profile is starting to inspire those great comments from total strangers like:  "Wow!  You sure are cute!"  hmmmmm.  Or "Aren't you just a cute little basketball."  hmmmmm.  I appreciate the old-college-try at a compliment, but I'm pretty sure they are just covering their **gasp**.  Nathan keeps it real: "Man, you look tired."  ummm..... still 9+ weeks left to really fill out.
We like the new house and the very friendly neighbors/neighborhood.
We love going to the pool through the gate in our backyard fence.
Nathan likes work -- and that says a lot considering how much he is there!  He works hard and long.
First day of school
Elle started school and got glasses!  She loves being in school, making new friends.  She is a brave girl.  She has turned into quite a book worm -- which I love seeing.
Ava will start preschool pretty soon(just 2 days a week)  -- not soon enough for her.  She is always saying "I'm BORED!"
But we also have lots of funny/fun conversations -- Just this morning she says to me:
Ava: "I just like to smell like clean air, but other people in my family don't smell like that."
Amy: "Oh?  What do I smell like?"
Ava: "Well, you smell like clean air, and dad does, but Elle doesn't."
Amy: "Even after her shower last night?  What does she smell like?"
Ava: "A skunk."
In Elle's defense -- I don't think she smells like a skunk.  But the earnestness of Ava's conversation cracked me up.  I don't know where she gets these little ideas.

Ava and Rock have a lot of time together now.  One of Ava's favorite games to play with him is to ask him questions.  He usually answers happily "uh-huh!" to anything she says.
One day she laughed and laughed because her conversation went like this.
Ava: "Are you a cutie?"
Rock: "Uh-huh!"
Ava: "Are you nice?"
Rock: "Uh-huh!"
Ava: "Are you a chubby?"
Rock: "Uh-huh!"
Ava: "Are you funny?"
Rock: "Uh-huh!"
Ava:  "Do you like blueberries?"
Rock: "Uh-huh!"
Ava -- running out of questions.  Thinks for a second... "Will you be my husband?"
Rock: "No."
Ava laughed herself sick.

Elle's new glasses which she picked out all by herself, and she found Ava some as well and made her a little case for them since she didn't want Ava to feel sad about not having glasses like her.
Rock is enough to keep both my hands busy, and my feet in a constant dance.  Yesterday he dumped his water on the floor just to see the splash... while I'm bent over cleaning that up, he walks easily into the kitchen reaches up on the counter to a measuring cup I had just filled with flour and poured that on the floor.  As I swept that up I notice he is heading in for some books -- "Good" I say to myself, "maybe that will keep him busy for a second".  As I'm pouring the flour into the garbage I hear "rrrrrippppp!"  Yep.  He took a few precious pages out in that one second.  Good thing he is so darn cute.  The other morning I heard him singing a duet (High School Musical song "Breakin' Free") with Elle in the Bathroom while she was doing her hair.  He was right there with her... he seriously knows the words (well, the vowels) and tune... and I just stood in the hallway with a huge smile on my face.
So here are a few photos from the past few weeks -- mostly just of the kids doing what they do.  And one of the new house.

Move #16

Yep! It's official. We are moving... again. Off to HOUSTON!
As hard as it is to be excited about packing up after just a 6 months in San Diego
(although Rock thinks it's a blast! I keep finding him in boxes, on top of boxes, or unloading boxes...)
we are really grateful and excited for the next phase.
Nathan will be with the same firm, just a different location.
More details to come...

My 21st Birthday!

Here is a look at my birthday festivities.  My family made it a happy one.

A table set for me...

Ava gave me a red soccer ball -- They know I like red.
Elle gave me a necklace she picked out herself.  See in above picture
We went to a "fancy" McDonalds by Nathan's work, for dinner.  It has gourmet salads and happy meals... something for everyone.

Ketchup

Read "Catch-up".
In 4th Grade my teacher Mr. Scott would trick us somehow into saying a phrase with the word "catch up" in it.  Like: "I need to catch up on my homework." (I'm not sure how he got us to say that.) And then he would call us to his desk and write the word "ketchup" on our hand.  Not sure if that was part of the fourth grade curriculum at the time but it sure stuck with me! Hmmm.
Anyhow.  It has been practically ages since I have updated my blog and there have been umpteen million things big and small that have occured since then.   Therefore:  I am going to attempt with this blog post, to be as minimal as possible and still "ketchup" on the last little while of our family's life.
Pictures fill in where I can't do all the words.

Here it goes:
After a happy "Nathan passed the Bar!" party... Nathan and his Dad drove to California the last few days of November, driving a Uhaul with all our stuff, pulling the car and driving the van loaded to the brim.  Housing option after housing option had been popping like bubbles before our eyes the last few days as December approached.  But it only takes one, and luckily one worked out in the school boundaries we were hoping for. While Nathan spent a few days waiting for our house and moving into the house, the kids and myself were enjoying our last few days at Grandma and Grandpa's house (while trying not to be too sad about that time coming to an end.)  We had some fun things to distract us -- like the ward Christmas party, singing in Relief Society ( the girls were a smash -- singing my Uncle Kelly's song), finishing up Christmas projects and trying to gather up any little odds and ends that didn't go with the rest of the stuff.
Then we flew to San Diego.  When we left Preston it was like 7 degrees.  When we landed in San Diego it was like 60.  It was raining, and so I couldn't see the amazing ocean views from the hills and our house when we arrived.  But I can see them now!  I love living here on this hill -- about 4 miles from the ocean.  I can see it from my backyard. I see it from my driveway. I see it on the way to the store.  I am still not used to it -- it is like a dream everytime I see it.  In the morning when I wake up -- I can see the firey sunrise too with the palm trees in silhouette.  At night when I go to sleep I can see the city lights in the distance.  Anyway, I like the place!  The kids are liking it to.  It turned out to be nice timing for moving here.  It was holiday time for the school, so Elle had three weeks with Ava to delve into boxes full of forgotten toys, books, clothes, etc. and get used to our surroundings.  Nathan had some training stuff -- but things were kind of slow and then closed up for the holidays, so he could help us do some sorting and arranging and playing!

On Christmas Eve we went to Coronado island to the Hotel Del Mar there and went ice skating -- at a rink right on the beach.  It was perfect weather and very fun.  We had a picnic there as well, and then went home for a nice little low key red and green Christmas dinner.
The holidays were fun because of the beautiful weather.  We had trips to the beach, Sea World, the Zoo... That's San Diego for you.
Nathan has been busy at work at this point -- which he loves.
Elle started school in a new school in the new year.  She is strong and up to the challenge.  She makes the best of things -- and she does like it a great deal.  Of course it isn't easy, but people have been nice and she is learning the ropes quickly. She does "running club" at school going twice a week to run before school starts.  Nathan and I have talked before about her having a body frame suited for running... long lanky legs.  Sometimes she comes home and reports that she ran 12 laps!  I'm inspired.
Ava is interested in learning to read and is picking it up quickly.  She misses Elle at school and can't wait to go to school to.  Just 2 more years, Ava!
And both Ava and Elle are taking dance class and violin class, so it is busy all around.
We try to go down to the beach on Friday after school... we just pick Elle up and go -- since it is just 2 blocks from the ocean.  The kids love the beach -- it is fun to watch them there.
Saturdays are Sea World or Zoo days -- Rock loves Sea World and the Zoo too!  He sits at attention through the Sea World shows and has now added "whale" and "fish" to his signing vocabulary.
Sundays -- we enjoy our ward.  I just got called as the Sunbeam teacher (Ava's class!)-- which means Nathan's calling is to watch Rock.

January's big event was Rock's first birthday.  We can't believe how fun he is!  He is a good natured lovey.  He hugs us and pats us, and makes us all feel so good.  He loves to climb and be outside.  He is always looking for something to laugh about... And he is a total Daddy's boy!  There is some serious male mojo -- he just feels special with his Dad.  I think Nathan might be a little bit "whooped".  It is so fun to see them together.

There.  Our life in a nutshell.  Whew.
Oh -- and come visit!
